Cell phone ban in NYC schools to be lifted

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -
Students in New York City's public schools will soon be allowed to carry their cell phones without fear of punishment or fines.
A ban on cell phones in the schools is expected to be lifted on Wednesday by Mayor Bill de Blasio. He is scheduled to make the announcement at 2:30 pm at the High School of Telecommunication Arts and Technology in Brooklyn.

Each school's administration can set the rules for cell phone usage from where they can be stored, when and where they can be used and if they can be used in the classroom.
If the school decides not to specify rules, the default plan takes effect which requires that cell phones be carried out of sight.

De Blasio administration officials say there are educational benefits to cell phones in the schools including helping multi-lingual students overcome barriers and increase class participation.
Allowing students to bring their cell phones into the school building will also save families nearly $200 a year in outside storage fees, a practice common for NYC public school students.
