CyraCom will set up its first New York City contact center this summer at Flushing Plaza at 41-61 Kissena Boulevard. |
Health care translation service CyraCom will be hiring hundreds of nearby residents in advance of opening its first New York City office at Muss Development’s Flushing Plaza, officials at the companies told the Daily News on Friday.
Seems like a natural fit for an area that counts 72% of its residents as foreign-born and where the job market has been a bit slower to rebound than other parts of the Big Apple.
When the ground-floor office opens this summer, it will be the sixth U.S. call center for the Arizona-based interpretation provider and, hopefully, a boon to the local economy.

Muss Development CyraCom executives estimate the call center will hold from 325 to 350 employees, the majority of which they anticipate to be new hires from areas surrounding Flushing Plaza. |
CyraCom, which translates 200 languages for thousands of health plans, hospitals and doctors, signed a 12-year lease on the 23,000-square-foot space in the Kissena Blvd. building, which commanded an asking rent in the low $40s per square foot, Muss said.
That’s comparable to downtown Brooklyn, and about what office space goes for in lower-priced areas of Manhattan.
Officials from the translation company said they were attracted by downtown Flushing’s diversity and nearby public transit options, said CyraCom executive Best Ihegborow.
“Spanish to English is number one, and it will continue to be so,” he said. “But you’re also seeing an influx of Asian-Americans immigrants, so there’s demand there as well.”
The company will staff what it calls a “contact center” with up to 350 employees in a cubicled layout, and most of the interpreters and managers will be hired from within the New York City area, Ihegborow added.
